I have used Sunflower books over a number of years and have found them very useful before and during trips. So was my experience with the Western Crete book, containing 8 car tours and 45 walks, which I used during a week's break in October /5(12).

The best thing to say about 'Landscapes of Western Crete' is that is makes an excellent work of fiction. Bearing in mind we only tried to do four of the walks (09/01) described in this book, and that Sunflower guides for other locations have resulted in excellent walking holidays (La Gomera, La Palma and Madeira), a lot of the information contained here is at best misleading and at worst 1/5(1).

Way Out West Crete. Our main purpose in coming to Chania was to explore the western part of the island which we attempted to do in a day. We needed more time but still managed to visit some amazing places and see enough to be able to say that this is probably the best part of Crete to explore, especially if you love sandy beaches and are staying in Chania.

Paleochora. Paleochora differs from many villages on the south coast of western Crete in that it is a large village where Cretans live and work all year around.

Its popularity with foreigners goes back to the hippy heydays of the 's. Nowadays, many more visitors come to spend their holidays in Paleochora but they are still, on the whole, more of the individualist type. | Crete is a tapestry of splendid beaches, ancient treasures and landscapes, weaving in vibrant cities and dreamy villages, where locals share their traditions, wonderful cuisine and generous spirit. Crete, especially the West of the island, is a walker's paradise.

It has the unique combination of beautiful seas and high mountains. The geographical diversity and wild beauty of the island, the friendliness of its inhabitants as well as the climate have made Crete into a choice destination for walking and hiking.

But alongside that, please consider 'Western Crete: Car Tours and Walks (Landscapes)' formerly known as 'landscapes of western crete', which specifically includes 8 car tours, 2 of which include Rethymnon, and most of the others could easily be adapted to include Rethymnon as a starting point.
